Job Description

A Construction Safety Officer is needed for GIBB Mining, a subsidiary of the GIBB Group, to add another skilled professional to their team.

Key Attributes:
Technical Proficiency: A solid comprehension of mining and heavy industrial construction safety practices, such as hazard identification, risk assessments, and incident prevention.

Regulatory Knowledge: A thorough understanding of the MHSA, OHSA, and environmental legislation (NEMA), including how these laws can be put to use on the job. Capability to create, implement, and maintain project safety files in accordance with client requirements is called safety management. The capacity to identify, evaluate, and reduce safety risks throughout all project phases is known as risk management.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and engagement with contractors and stakeholders.

Leadership: Ability to influence and drive a strong safety culture across all project teams and contractors.

Problem-solving: the capacity to effectively respond to safety incidents and put corrective measures into action.

Attention to Detail: Strong focus on compliance, documentation, and auditing requirements.

Adaptability: The capacity to function effectively in a mining and construction setting that is constantly changing.

Responsibilities:
•The project safety file should be created, implemented, and maintained in accordance with client and regulatory requirements. •Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation (MHSA, OHSA, NEMA).
•Before beginning any activities on the site, ensure construction readiness by preparing all necessary safety documentation. •Conduct safety reviews, hazard identification studies, and risk assessments.

•Review and approve contractor safety files, method statements, and risk assessments.
•Monitor site activities to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.
•Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety walk-downs.
•Lead incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
•Maintain accurate safety records and reporting, including statistics and compliance tracking.
•Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and awareness sessions.
•Promote and enforce a zero-harm safety culture across all project stakeholders.
•Coordinate with site requirements and communicate with client safety representatives.

•Support onboarding and induction processes, including ensuring all personnel meet site safety requirements.

Qualifications:

•National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, or a related field SACPCMP registration is preferred (CHSO / Pr.CHSA). •Relevant safety certifications (e.g. SAMTRAC) advantageous

Experience:
•Construction safety experience ranging from eight to ten years in heavy industry or mining environments is required. •Experience working in EPC/EPCM projects
•Experience working in similar client environments advantageous

Understanding of: MHSA, OHSA, and environmental legislation
Safety management systems and auditing
•Procedures for incident investigation Construction site safety practices
